The United States announced that it had bombed the province of Deir Ezzor in eastern Syria to protect its personnel from attacks by groups supported by Iran and its Revolutionary Guards. US Central Command Communications Director Colonel Joe Buccino said the bombings were ordered by President Joe Biden, deeming them “necessary” to protect US personnel.
“The United States has taken deliberate and proportionate measures aimed at limiting the risk of escalation and minimizing the risk of casualties”, Washington explained, assuring that “it does not want a conflict and that it is in Syria to ensure the definitive defeat of the Islamic State” .
The statement justifies the operation by referring to the attack suffered by the US-led international coalition in northeastern Syria on August 15, just hours after Washington reported an attack on its Al Tanf military base in the south of the country, near at the border triangle between Syria, Iraq and Jordan.
