Sweden | Middle schoolers ate the world’s hottest chili in the middle of the school day – the local store took action

In Swedish there was a chili episode at the middle school on Monday of last week, Swedish newspapers reported.

Local of Lerums Tidningen about a dozen students ate the hottest chili in the world, the Carolina Reaper – some completely unknowingly. The situation happened at Torpskolan secondary school in Lerum, which is located twenty kilometers from Gothenburg.

Chili had ended up at school with the students. School administrator Janne Olsson claimed to the local newspaper that the students had tricked their schoolmates into eating chili by, for example, hiding it in their dishes in the school canteen.

“So they do [chiliä syöneet oppilaat] threw up in the toilet. One had shortness of breath, and we had to send one home,” Olsson told Lerums Tidningen.

Middle school principal Carolina Lundblad however denied Aftonbladet in an interview that chili was hidden in school food. According to Lundblad, some students brought chili to school during recess.

“Some students went to buy chili and tested it. As far as I understand, it was a maximum of five people,” the principal told Aftonbladet.

He also denied that any of the students vomited because of the chili.

“It was probably about someone who wasn’t feeling well,” commented the principal.

Lerumin the grocery store in the center of the municipality took action after the chili episode. Carolina Reaper chilies were temporarily removed from the selection, and now only people over 18 can buy them.

Guinness World Records declared the Carolina Reaper the world’s hottest chili variety in 2013.
