Sweden | A fire broke out on a passenger ferry off Gotska Sandön in the Baltic Sea, there are about 300 passengers on board

The alarm about the fire on the Stena Scandica passenger ferry came in around 12:40 p.m. Swedish time. The fire that broke out in the refrigerated container on the car deck has been contained.

According to Franzén, a few people have been evacuated from the ship so far, but the rescue director must decide whether to carry out a full-scale evacuation.

Also Spokesperson for the Swedish Maritime Administration Lisa Mjörning said the fire is under control.

However, according to Mjörning, sea rescue boats and helicopters have been alerted to the scene.

“If we have to evacuate passengers, it will be done in good cooperation with the Marine Rescue Association and the coast guard,” he said.

“For now, it appears that there is no need to evacuate the passengers.”

Destination Gotland – the CEO of the tourism promotion association by Martin Risberg according to the rescue group Sweden Rescue has asked the association to help.

“Our own ferry MS Visby was on its way from Nynäshamn to Visby, Gotland. It is currently heading towards the Stena Scandica ferry. At the moment I can’t say how close to Scandica MS Visby came. For example, we are preparing our helicopter deck for use,” Risberg told SVT.
