Digitalization, communication and, above all, sustainability, are the three common threads of PlaySpain.golf, a new project to promote golf in Spain financed with NextGen funds by the General Secretariat of Tourism.
This new platform was born with the purpose of unifying the entire golf tourism offer in Spain and, in turn, transmitting what this industry means for the country and erasing the stigma that golf has among the population in terms of sustainability, the fundamental pillar of the project.
The data
Golf in Spain attracts 1.4 million tourists a year who have a total impact of 15,937 million euros counting direct, indirect and induced turnover
In this sense, the University of Cádiz, with the collaboration of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation and the Spanish Association of Golf Courses, has prepared the Report on golf courses and water, which corroborates the work that has been carried out for years. is doing in the sector to reduce water consumption.
The headline of the report would be that Spain is the country in Europe in which the most reclaimed water is used to irrigate golf courses. Specifically, 59% of the routes are irrigated with this type of water, as opposed to, for example, 21% in the United States. In Catalonia, the percentage rises to 73 and, in the Balearic Islands, up to 96.
The report also reflects that the population does not perceive the efforts of golf courses to reduce water consumption, which is confirmed by the aforementioned data. In addition, a return of 147 euros is estimated for each cubic meter used for irrigation, of which 16 remain on the golf course itself and the remaining 131 go to other sectors.
As far as numbers are concerned, the Economic Report on the Impact of Golf in Spain, which was presented by Juan Santaló, professor at IE University, estimates the total impact on the economy at 15,937 million euros, including direct turnover. indirect and induced.
In addition, he estimates that there are 10,000 direct jobs created by golf courses in Spain, a job that he describes as “quality” since 93% are full-time and with an indefinite contract, well above the average for other sectors.
