A supermarket employee discovered the palm-sized spider in a transport box from overseas on Thursday morning. The fire brigade had to come. It is already the second finding of spiders this week on the Lower Rhine.
ZFor the second time this week, a poisonous spider in a banana box on the Lower Rhine has called the fire brigade into action. A clerk at a supermarket in Rees spotted a large exotic spider in the overseas shipping box Thursday morning, a city spokesman said. With the help of a glass, the animal was prevented from exploring the market. The fire brigade secured the glass until an expert from the Terra Zoo in Rheinberg arrived, who took the spider away. He identified the animal as a warmhouse giant crab spider. A bite is poisonous but not fatal.
A similar example appeared at a grocery discounter in Krefeld just two days ago. Here, too, the fire brigade was deployed. Employees of the store discovered the animal on Monday in a banana box from the Dominican Republic, the fire department said. They would have reacted in an exemplary manner and packed the box, including bananas and spider, securely in a plastic bag. The fire brigade control center meanwhile sent a reptile expert to the supermarket.
Because the employees also photographed the exotic animal, it was quickly identified. It was also a warmhouse giant crab spider. The spider was moved to a fire brigade transport box and handed over to an animal rescue service.
