According to Masahiro Sakurai – creator of the Smash Bros. series – the (many) characters of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate they all have it same win percentage. The information comes from Sakurai’s most recent video, published on the “Masahiro Sakurai on Creating Games” channel.
Sakurai presented some win rate statistics of fighters and talked about what is needed to achieve good balance in video games. The fact that all characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate have similar win rates indicates that it is a quality product.
Talking about the specific data, the creator of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate he was unable to indicate the numbers of every single character in the fighting game but he still indicated some reference points.
Sakurai has in fact revealed that the character with the best performance wins 51.43% of the time, while the one with the worst performance wins 47.18% of the time. The win rates of the other 85 characters therefore fall between these two figures. This is a very minimal difference and confirms the fact that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is absolutely well balanced, as far as its characters are concerned.
Sakurai’s words on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
“This tells us that every fighter has a chance to win a fight,” Sakurai said. “In fact, it would be difficult to make them even more similar.”
The creator of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has specified that it is “real data collected all over the world” and which therefore presents authentic figures “without any bias”. This is not internal developer data, in other words.
Because then the players are often convinced that certain characters are worse than others? “The Internet can tend to be something of an echo chamber, so if people start saying something is strong or weak, that assessment will gain momentum and make people think it’s truer than it is,” he said.
Still speaking of Sakurai, the director of Super Smash Bros. said what his favorite gaming year is.
