The number of new corona cases is falling. In the past seven days, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) registered 36,155 positive tests. The summer wave has thus weakened to the level at the end of June, about three weeks ago. The peak of the wave is behind us, at least for now.
Compared to last week, the number of positive tests has fallen by about 17 percent. That is the biggest drop since May 4. It is the fourth day in a row that the number of positive tests has fallen on a weekly basis, after 46 consecutive days of increase.
4509 infections came to light between Tuesday morning and Wednesday morning. For a Wednesday, that is the lowest number in five weeks. Last Wednesday, RIVM reported more than 6800 positive tests, the Wednesday before more than 6400 and a week earlier almost 6300.
RIVM only receives the results of corona tests that have been carried out in the test locations of the GGDs. Self-tests are not counted, so the actual number of positive tests is likely higher. But the number of people who go to the test lane to get confirmation of a self-test is falling.

Whether the decline continues depends, among other things, on a new sub-variant that has emerged in the Netherlands. It’s called BA.2.75 alias centaurus. Much is not yet known about this version of the omikron variant of the coronavirus, but it seems to be able to circumvent the built-up defenses. Other sub-variants named B.2.12.1, BA.4 and BA.5. could do that too. Their rapid spread gave rise to the current wave.
RIVM received seven reports in the past day that people have died as a result of their corona infection. It concerns residents of the municipalities of Amsterdam, Utrecht, Den Bosch, Zevenaar, Berg en Dal, Hardinxveld-Giessendam and Rucphen.
