of Sudan in the capital Khartoum, hundreds of people gathered on Friday to oppose the military leadership ruling the country and the general Abdel Fattah al-Burhanisays news agency AFP.

Friday’s demonstrations are a continuation of Thursday’s demonstrations, in which tens of thousands of people took part. At least nine people died when security forces broke up Thursday’s protests.

“The people want to overthrow [al-Burhanin]. We demand punishment,” some protesters shouted on Friday as they carried pictures of those killed in the protests.

In total According to a local first aid organization that supports the opposition, 113 people have died in Sudan’s protests and related clashes. The citizens demanded the ouster of the military junta led by al-Burhan and the return of civilian rule to the country.

On Friday, protesters set up barricades and set car tires on fire in northern Khartoum. Security forces fired tear gas into the crowd. Several people were wounded.

The violent suppression of the demonstrations drew criticism from the international community.

“Tens of thousands of Sudanese took to the streets today to demand democracy. We support their goals. We condemn in the strongest possible terms the security forces’ decision to use heavy ammunition against civilians,” the US State Department’s Office of African Affairs tweeted.

of Sudan police accused protesters of injuring 96 police and 128 armed forces officers, some with “life-threatening” injuries on Thursday.

Al-Burhan was at the forefront of ousting Sudan’s former dictator Omar al-Bashir in 2019. However, relations between the general and the civilian administration became inflamed and in October 2021, al-Burhan seized power for himself.

Among other things, the UN and the African Union have tried to mediate negotiations between the Sudanese civil administration and the generals, but so far without success. Norwegian Ambassador to Sudan Therese Løken Gheziel condemned on Twitter the reports that the detained people have been tortured and sexually assaulted.
