Around 6:23 in the afternoon this Thursday, March 28, a strong earthquake shook central Venezuela.
According to preliminary data from the Geological Service of Colombia (SGC), the tremor was magnitude 5.2.
Residents of Cúcuta, a Colombian city on the border with Venezuela, reported that the earthquake was felt very strongly in that territory. They also recorded the movement in Bucaramanga.
Venezuelan authorities confirmed that the epicenter of the earthquake was 30 kilometers from El Tocuyo, in Lara state.
At the moment, relief agencies are sweeping the areas where it was strongly felt to establish if there are any effects.
On social networks, people have indicated that they felt strong in Maracaibo and Barquisimeto and Mérida.
According to the SGC, the maximum perceived intensity was four, meaning it was widely felt. The depth of this movement was superficial; that is, less than 30 kilometers.
After the earthquake, Funvisis, the Venezuelan foundation for seismological research, called for calm and asked citizens to make a report if they were affected.
