The first zero
Complete misstep forAston Martin in the Monaco Grand Prix, where the English team finished with both its drivers out of the points for the first time this season. To the misfortune of Stroll’s left rear puncture, forced to return to the pits a second time after a strategy that proved useless and passed under the checkered flag in 14th positionthe colorless performance of has been added Fernando Alonso, 11th at the finish.
The strategy ruined by the puncture
In a race almost completely devoid of overtaking and pit stops, thanks to the tire changes carried out by all the teams during the immediate suspension of the race for the Red flag, the Canadian opted for a different strategy aimed at attacking Gasly for 10th place. Thanks to the safety gap made possible by Alonso’s teamwork, immediately behind him, the goal was lost due to a puncture which forced him to inevitably return to the pits for the second time: “I think we expected a race based on tire management, so it wasn’t a surprise, especially after the restart – explained #18 – here you need a big delta to overtake, so we did what we could with the strategy. I had a certain gap to Gasly, so we made the pit stop for hard tires to try to beat him in the second part of the Grand Prix. In the end it didn’t work and we lost a point. This weekend wasn’t the easiest and it shows we need to find a greater pace“.
The whole race with the mediums
A disappointment that adds to that of Alonso, winner in 2006 and 2007 with McLaren. Also in this case, the Spaniard had to deal with bad luck, this time linked to the replacement of tires immediately after the start and maintained until the end: “We were a bit unlucky at the start of the race – he added – we chose the Hard tire to start the race with the aim of going very long in the first stint. With the red flag everyone changed their tires, we did the same but we had to mount the Mediums and go all the way, which was torturous. It was very difficult to keep the tires alive. At one point we thought about trying a different strategy with Lance with a pit stop to attack Gasly, we were out of the points with nothing to lose. It didn’t work, but overall it was a disappointing weekend. We need to get better for Canada.”
