The Bonn virologist Hendrik Streeck has lamented political omissions in view of the low corona vaccination rate and pleaded for a renewed intensification of the vaccination campaign.
Berlin – “What I missed most about the summer months was not actually just a vaccination advertisement – that was just not enough – but also a real vaccination information,” said Streeck on Thursday evening in the ZDF program “Maybrit Illner”. Many citizens are still unsure and fearful whether they should be vaccinated. “I do believe that there is still a long way to go, even through good education.”
According to Green Party leader Katrin Göring-Eckardt, many vaccination options have been disregarded over the summer. Concerned young women, for example, should have been given the opportunity to be vaccinated by trusted doctors, such as a gynecologist. With a view to the coming months, Göring-Eckardt called for the vaccination campaign to be intensified as soon as possible. “If the vaccination doesn’t start really quickly – we lose day after day – then it will still cause us problems in January and February,” said the Green politician on the ZDF broadcast.
Frank Montgomery sees it similarly. According to the chairman of the board of the World Medical Association, vaccination has “wasted a lot, a lot of time”. Israel has already “boosted” 95 percent of its population, ie given booster vaccinations. “And we’re still talking about how we want to do it,” criticized Montgomery. “I regret the lack of conception, although the ideas of what to do have actually been on the table since the summer.” Instead, they “talked, met, but made no decisions”.
