Tomorrow storm Corrie will pass over the Netherlands. The KNMI has issued a code yellow for the entire country. Traffic and outdoor activities may be hindered by the gusts of wind and there may also be flooding on the coast and at the IJsselmeer.
According to Weather Plaza Corrie will travel over the southwestern part of the Netherlands on Monday morning. In the coastal provinces strong wind gusts of 80 to 90 kilometers per hour occur, in the coastal areas up to 100 kilometers per hour and near the sea up to about 110 kilometers per hour. Heavy gusts of wind will also occur elsewhere in the country during the morning.
Diana Woei van Weerplaza: ,,The wind in the east of Brabant, Gelderland and Limburg is expected to be strongest in the early afternoon. Wind gusts of 75 to 90 km per hour are possible there. In the afternoon the wind in the coastal regions slowly decreases in strength.”
Centre
However, there is much less wind around the core of the depression. According to the current weather forecast, the northeast of the country will have to deal with the center of the depression. That is why, in Friesland, Groningen and Drenthe in particular, a moderate wind blows at most.
Last night, Rijkswaterstaat closed the Hollandsche IJsselkering and the Haringvliet locks due to increased water levels along the coast. These water levels can occur several times a year, and are also expected in the coming days.
In areas outside the dikes on the coast there may be flooding (including Maassluis and Vlaardingen). Several areas on the east coast of the IJsselmeer will also (partly) be flooded. Rijkswaterstaat and the water boards take measures where necessary, such as closing culverts and flood defences. Storm surge barrier Ramspol is expected to be closed tomorrow. In addition, the Meppelerdiep lock will be used.
showers
In addition to wind, there will also be a lot of showers next week. Monday it will be regionally wet with about 10 millimeters of rain. Tuesday it will rain mainly in the morning. The umbrella is also sometimes necessary in the following days, but it rains less than at the beginning of the week.
Yesterday it was already windy in the north and east of the Netherlands, which resulted in the necessary storm damage. For example, several trees were blown down and a driver in trouble when his trailer overturned. The KNMI also issued a code yellow because of heavy gusts of wind. The warning was withdrawn around 9:30 p.m.
Storms with a name
Storms for which the KNMI issues a code orange or red have been given a name since 2019. In some cases, a storm can also be named with code yellow, as is the case with Corrie. The list of names is being compiled in collaboration with the weather services of Great Britain and Ireland, which have been naming storms for some time. The Netherlands is introducing several names this year, including Corrie, Tineke and Franklin. Storm Corrie is named after Corrie van Dijk, the first female meteorologist at the KNMI in 1964.
