With the return of Kevin Magnussen at Haas, the 2022 Formula 1 grid is complete again. The Danish driver, first on foot for 2021 and then recalled after the interruption of the relationship between his former team and Nikita Mazepin, beat the competition of Antonio Giovinazzi and Nico Hülkenberg. The official designated initially was Pietro Fittipaldi, but the Brazilian would not have ensured a sufficient budget, while team principal Günther Steiner he gradually became convinced of the need for an experienced pilot.
The South Tyrolean himself commented on the return of K-Mag to the team: “With Kevin, we know what we have. If the car is good, it will lead to points“, These are the words reported by Auto Motor und Sport. Steiner added on Haas channels that Magnussen was a logical choice, considering his immediate availability: “We were looking for a driver who could bring value to the team, not to mention his great experience in Formula 1, and Kevin was a simple decision for us. His immediate availability meant we could have him as a pre-season testing resource alongside Mick Schumacher and Pietro Fittipaldi. Pietro will be the first this week with half a day of testing on Thursday and it is a great opportunity for him, in the following days Mick and Kevin will be shooting. Magnussen was a key component in our previous results. He went on to demonstrate his talent last year at IMSA, adding wins and podiums to his resume. As a veteran, he will be a solid point of reference for us with the ongoing development of the VF-22. We are all looking forward to welcoming Kevin to Bahrain this week“.
“Of course I was very surprised and at the same time happy when the call came“, he added Magnussen. “There was actually more to my plans for 2022, but the opportunity to compete in Formula 1, and then with a team I know so well, was just too tempting. I have to thank Peugeot and Chip Ganassi Racing for giving me the green light so quickly. Both are great teams“.
