Valve has always maintained the similarity of Steam Deck with a PC, more than with a portable gaming platform. It should, therefore, be able to support the library of titles on users’ Steam accounts.
Although the videos posted on the official Steam Deck Twitter account show games that run well and, until recently, Valve had not found anything problematic, the reality is more complex and several titles seem to be hardly compatible. The cause could be attributed to Technical Problems deep, due to requirements hardware, or ai anti-cheat services, which need modification to work on the operating system.
Valve’s plan to solve these misunderstandings is ambitious: Steam games, which number several tens of thousands, they will be manually reviewed by the Valve team themselves, and assigned to a category describing how they work on Steam Deck and related problems. The review process will focus on four key points: input support, display native resolution support (with readable text), general hardware compatibility, and compatibility with Proton.
The titles that respond positively to all the requirements will be included in the category Verified, while others will be cataloged in the group Playable, if they work well enough but some user settings changes will be required. Not sufficiently functional games on the Steam Deck will fall into the category Not supported. Finally, those not yet reviewed by Valve will be below Stranger.
By browsing, next to each title it will be possible to locate a identification badge with the category to which it belongs. The Steam library section will also receive a new tab, called Great on Deck and containing only games from the Verified group. Valve aims to allow Steam users to see which of their games will be compatible with the console at launch.
Steam Deck designers, Greg Coomer And Lawrence Yang, they stated during an interview:
Steam has a lot of games, and Valve is putting a significant effort into this review program. We have hired an additional group of testers specifically to study compatibility with Steam Deck, and will continue to hire additional staff to support this group. It will take some time to review the Steam catalog (with new titles rolling out all the time, too) but part of this project will be accessible in the near future.
It is very important that customers know that the compatibility information will be very accurate and will last for the entire life cycle of a game. Probably many titles will be revised several times, for example if the developer releases important updates, solving previous problems that would allow the title to be moved to the Verified category, or if Valve fixes a Proton bug. There will be new revisions even if we will receive feedback from users on the fact that our evaluation is not correct.
Recall that, a few months ago, compatibility with the Oculus Quest device was confirmed. The information was reported on the site TechRadar, confirming Steam Deck’s successful marriage to other devices.
According to a leak Furthermore, directly from the site, the console which is also a computer may already have the perfect competitor: it is Lenovo Legion Play, with an Android system that will also allow cloud gaming.
