The Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) has reported that the eruption took place in the Sundhnuksgigar volcanic fissure, located on the outskirts of the town of Grindavik, at 11:14 p.m. It is about lThe seventh eruption that has occurred at the volcano since last December.
The fissure appears to have extended for three kilometers where it hlocated 700 meters from the road from Grindavík. Iceland has declared a state of emergency and evacuated the surrounding areas of the volcano
IMO specialist Benedikt Ofeigsson told public radio RAS2 that no infrastructure was currently threatened, but Grindavik, a small fishing village, was being evacuated.
