Today’s best golfers, including five Latin Americans, will play the 122nd edition of the US Open until June 19. In this event, which returns to Brookline for the first time since 1988, some players will be presented who days ago were sanctioned by the PGA after participating in the first tournament of the LIV Golf Series, an event financed by Saudi Arabia and a country to which some nations Westerners point to committing human rights abuses.
At the beginning of June, the most successful golfer in the world, the American Tiger Woods, announced that he would not participate in the third major tournament of the year, the US Open.
However, the debate between specialists and fans has revolved around the emergence of a new circuit: the LIV Golf Series, which has been rejected by many, mainly by the Professional Golfers Association (PGA), but which has managed to seduce several of the members of the tour.
After its first event, held in London, the PGA announced that a total of 17 players would be expelled from its ranks. Despite this, some will be part of the US Open thanks to an extension of the United States Golf Association (USGA), an organization that announced that it could sanction them in the future
“The tournament begins with the particularity of what Liv Golf has provoked, this Saudi tour that has sparked debate in the world of golf and in which Sergio García, Dustin Johnson and others who have already agreed to play LIV Golf will be present ( …) It is worth mentioning that several players, prior to knowing the PGA sanction, had chosen to renounce it”, explains Juan David Bernal, contributor to ‘Golf Channel’ and ‘Marca Claro’ in a conversation with France 24.
The 122nd edition of one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world will begin in the state of Massachusetts, in one of the oldest courses in the United States that has not hosted the tournament since 1988, and will bring together the most select of the discipline.
Rory McIlroy, with options to keep the title
While it’s hard to pick a pre-tournament favorite in golf, the season’s performances could paint a picture of how close the competition will be and which player could capitalize on his strengths to win the title.
Under this premise, the Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy starts as one of the favorites to win the trophy in the third ‘major’ of the year. This player, fourth in the ranking this season, has just won the RBC Canadian Open playing at a high level.
“McIlroy comes in with that momentum and that’s why I think he can be one of the candidates for the tournament. Justin Thomas, the American who won the last major, the PGA Championship, I think he is also another one who is called to have a good participation (…) As for the Latinos, Mito Pereira, who made many mistakes on the last hole of the PGA Championship, I could be one of those who can have a good performance and Joquin Nieman, in my opinion, has the most complete game”, says the specialist.
