The Government has appointed Joaquín María de Arístegui Laborde as the new Spanish ambassador in Buenos Aires, as confirmed by Foreign Affairs sources, a decision with which Spain returns to normal diplomatic relations with the Latin American country after the withdrawal of the ambassador in May passed by Javier Milei’s insults to Pedro Sánchez, for which he has not apologized.
In a joint statement from both governments, it is highlighted that Spain and Argentina are “brotherly peoples, united by deep human and social ties.”
Last May, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, announced the definitive withdrawal of the ambassador in Buenos Aires, María Jesús Alonso, due to the attitude of the Argentine president, Javier Milei.
“The withdrawal of the ambassador means that the embassy will continue at the level of chargé d’affaires,” Albares said then, and insisted that Milei ask for “public apologies after what was an assault” on the reception given to the president of the Argentine Government during a weekend in Madrid, where he attended a Vox event.
