According to the State Secretary of Education, it is necessary to improve the “protection network” and the care related to mental health
The government of São Paulo will increase security in schools and hire 1,000 psychologists. The announcement was made this Thursday (13.Apr.2023) by the governor of the State, Tarcisio de Freitas (Republicans), at the Thomazia Montoro state school – where, at the end of March, a 13-year-old teenager had a knife attack. According to the state government, R$ 240 million will be invested.
To take care of security, private companies will be contracted. Professionals will be unarmed. The government of São Paulo is still going to create a direct line between schools and the PM (Military Police).
In an interview with the newspaper The State of S. Paulopublished this Thursday (13.Apr), Renato Feder, state secretary of Education, said that the The state will also train 5,000 teachers to talk to students, identify mental health issues and refer cases for professional treatment.
“We need to increase the protection network, reception, improve mental health care”, he declared. A survey carried out by the secretariat – carried out last week with 25,000 teachers in the network– showed that the greatest demand from teachers is the presence of psychologists in schools.
The state government also intends, according to him, to improve the application used by schools to report incidents and integrate it with health services and the guardianship council. “If the student is depressed and needs a psychiatrist, the UBS will have access to the application and the school will then charge, to know if the appointment was made”, said Feder.
