The official TopGear Advice: If you’re on a road trip across America, pick the biggest V8 you can find. When in Rome, do as the Romans do, they sometimes say. The petrol price there is also hitting record highs, but it is still much cheaper than here. If you really like to do an electric road trip through America, you will soon be able to do that too.
You have come a long way with Tesla’s Supercharger network, but in America those charging stations cannot yet be used with foreign brands. There is now a $5 billion plan to install a charging station every 80 kilometers where at least four cars can charge simultaneously with 150 kW. In theory you could even drive a Renault Zoe (and a lot of patience) throughout America.
The focus is first on a comprehensive charging network along the highways, after which the gaps are filled. The construction of charging stations will start this year and the plan should be fully rolled out within five years. By 2030, there should be more than 500,000 charging stations throughout the US.
