As widely anticipated, during the less than ten-minute technical presentation broadcast this afternoon, Sony has officially unveiled the PS5 Proa more powerful and high-performance version of its latest generation console, which will guarantee superior performance on all games that support it.
In short, it’s a similar situation to the one that was created when the PS4 Pro was announced. So we are faced with a mid-generation console, but with a video game industry that is profoundly different from the one back then.
Mark Cerny showed off the new consolewho has been leading Sony’s gaming hardware work for years and whose career in the gaming industry dates back almost to the founding of the industry.
All the details of PS5 Pro
The video started with Cerny who, without too much preamble, immediately talked about PS5 Pro, first summarizing the features of PS5 to compare them to those of the new hardware, such as ray tracing and the super fast SSD. There was also a short segment for the DualSense, the official controller.
Then he went on to explain one of the main goals of PS5 Pro: reduce the gap between the quality of fidelity modes and game performance. How? With a larger GPU capable of rendering speeds that are 45% faster than the PS5, with ray tracing that is three times faster, and with PSSR, Sony’s proprietary AI-based upscaling system which greatly increases game performance (similar to what NVIDIA’s DLSS does, for example).
Cerny also showed off the effects of the PS5 Pro’s new features on some games, such as The Last of Us Part II, which can now run at fidelity mode quality at 60fps, or Horizon Forbidden West, which has sharper graphics and better performance.
In the end PS5 Pro was shownwhose design corresponds to the one revealed in the last few days, therefore very similar to that of the original console but with the “decoration” made up of three transverse fins instead of the single, thin slot present on the PS5.
The price of the console has finally been revealedwhich will not be cheap at all, given that it will cost a whopping 799 euros. It will be digital only (so no disc version) and will be available starting November 7, 2024, with pre-orders starting September 26, 2024.
In the package we will find: a 2TB SSD, a DualSense and a copy of Astro’s Playroom pre-installed (like on PS5). Those who want the optical drive will have to buy it separately, bringing the overall price of the console up to €920. Those who also want the Stand, which will not be included in the package, will have to spend another €30, for a total price of €950.
There has been a lot of talk about the PS5 Pro over the past few months and years. It has been known for some time that it was in development, but there were doubts about when Sony would unveil it. Recently, however, the rumors have multiplied and several materials related to the console have emerged, which have anticipated it, revealing most of its features ahead of today’s presentation.
