At Eastbourne the Turin player defeated in the remake of last year’s final by 7-6 (3) 6-2. From Monday he will lose 19 positions in the standings, coming out of the Top 50
In the remake of last year’s final, Lorenzo Sonego is stopped again by the Australian Alex De Minaur. The Turin-born, who defended precious points at Eastbourne, left the stage in the round of 16, giving way to the defending champion in two sets with a score of 7-6 (3) 6-2, gained at the end of an hour and 27 minutes of the game. In a first set dominated by services, the epilogue could only be the tie-break, dominated by De Minaur 7-3. What made the difference in the second set, after the break and counter-break between the second and third game, were instead two and breaks scored by the Australian (at 2-1 and at 5-2). In the next round the seeded n. 6 on the board, he will find the winner of the match between the American Tommy Paul (35 Atp) and the other blue in the race, Jannik Sinner, returning to the circuit after the knee injury that forced him to retire during the round of 16 of Roland Garros.
Collapse of ranking
–
A defeat that hurts Sonego. Starting from Monday with the updated ranking, the 32 ATP Turinese will suffer a neck in the standings of almost 20 positions (lost 235 points), finding himself just outside the top 50 players in the world and settling at position 51. The 27-year-old Italian is experiencing a complex season, who since the beginning of the year (in 16 events played) has collected just 15 victories, compared to 17 defeats (7 of which in the first round). Now it will be important for Sonego to turn the page quickly, in view of the third Grand Slam of the season, Wimbledon (June 27-July 10), where he defends the round of 16.
