Berlin – CSU boss Markus Söder has promised the new CDU boss Friedrich Merz close cooperation and backed his decision to take over the presidency of the Union faction. “The year 2021 will not and should not be repeated,” assured the Bavarian Prime Minister on Wednesday in Berlin at the two-day winter retreat of the CSU state group in the Bundestag. In the federal election campaign, Söder repeatedly taunted the then CDU chairman and later failed Union chancellor candidate Armin Laschet.
Söder now emphasized that it was clear to him that the offices of parliamentary group and party leader should best be in one hand. It is also clear “that a party chairman has the natural right of access, especially after such a convincing result”. Merz was elected with over 95 percent. The incumbent faction leader Ralph Brinkhaus then decided not to run again after several talks with Merz. Brinkhaus would have liked to be re-elected to head the parliamentary group.
Söder thanked Brinkhaus for the good cooperation. In a difficult phase, the group leader “showed attitude and held the shop together well”. In the consideration, however, it was clear to the CSU, “that standardization and clout must now be increased there. Especially when you’re in the opposition.”
Söder made it clear that the success of the Union in Germany is also very important for the CSU in Bavaria. “Only if the Union as a whole gets higher in Germany will we also get ahead in Bavaria. There is no complete decoupling, »he said against the background of the Bavarian state elections next year. “That’s why it’s important for the Union to appear as a whole nationally.” The Union must take a clever and clear middle course that involves voters on a broad basis. The role of the CSU is: “Govern well in Bavaria, oppose critically and constructively in Berlin.”
“The new government is lurching,” said Söder, but at the same time warned: “No one can now believe that there will be changes within weeks. It will be a long way, also to strengthen and broaden the Union.” (dpa)
