CoefficientsAfter another sublime week in Europe, Dutch football has regained virtual sixth place in the coefficient ranking. All five Dutch teams remained unbeaten and (possibly) remain active across the borders after the turn of the year. The state of affairs in four chapters.
Ajax showed that it is aware of the coefficients: the team from Amsterdam fulfilled their sporting duty with the victory over Besiktas and added 0.400 points to the Dutch total. PSV followed suit with a win over Sturm Graz, while Feyenoord, Vitesse and AZ drew. As a result, the total Dutch weekly yield after the matches came to 1,400.
However, it didn’t stop there. Feyenoord and AZ scored four full points extra for Dutch football. Both teams took a needed point to ensure a group win, which was offset by a nice coefficient bonus of 0.800 points in total. After reaching the next Champions League round at the beginning of November, Ajax also secured bonus points.
Moreover, there are many more points ahead after the winter break. In addition to Ajax, Feyenoord and AZ, PSV and Vitesse still have everything in their own hands for the winter. The people of Eindhoven are already sure of a place in the Conference League, if things still go wrong in the Europa League. In the most favorable scenario, the Netherlands will have at least ten more matches in 2022 to make the coefficient score explode. The second place for PSV yields two bonus points, that of Vitesse one.
The gap on numbers five and six France and Portugal remains unbridgeable for this season. The dramatic 2017/18 season is too heavy for that. The Netherlands is on an island, because the gap with number eight Austria has also become huge at a killer pace. The Netherlands has started an impressive catch-up race this season. Thanks to the top performances across the borders, the gap to Portugal has already been reduced by 4,684 points.
5. France – 53,581
6. Portugal – 48,382
7. NETHERLANDS – 42,700
8. Austria – 35,450
9. Scotland – 33,500
After the Netherlands wrote history at the beginning of this month by virtually taking sixth place, a step back had to be made on Wednesday. Sporting CP defeated Borussia Dortmund, secured their wintering and helped Portugal get past the Netherlands again. After a Thursday evening to dream of, however, the momentum is back with the Netherlands. Virtually, the Portuguese have dropped to seventh place again. If we delete the results from 2017/18 for the sake of convenience, the champagne can already be turned cold for two direct Champions League tickets.
5. France – 42,080
6. NETHERLANDS – 39,800
7. Portugal – 38.716
