Frost and the varying weather between temperatures has made the streets slippery and increased the need for sanding. There has been a shortage of sandblasting, especially in the Turku area.

Sales and project manager of Rudus oy, which supplies stone products all over Finland Janne Paaso considers this winter exceptional.

“February is usually the busiest time for sanding in southern Finland. This time the season started much earlier than the end of last year. ”

According to Paason, inventories were at their lowest at the turn of January – February. The company has responded to exceptional demand by concentrating production from other stone products to sandblasting.

“We also moved one of our plants from one shift to two shifts, effectively doubling daily production.”

Sales director of Rudus, which produces crumbs Tuomas Mikkola says that sales of crushed stone have been exceptional, especially in Southwest Finland.

According to Mikkola, the stocks of some aggregate suppliers are completely depleted and the shortage of crushed stone is especially evident in the small localities of Southwest Finland.

“It has never been possible to prepare for this. We have been lucky that the stocks have not yet been sold out. ”

Rudus Piikkiö’s warehouse has 3 to 6 millimeters of crushed stone and about 10,000 to 20,000 tonnes in Pargas.

“It sounds like a lot, but during January, for example, about 20,000 tons of crushed stone left Parais. Sales have been inferential, ”says Mikkola.

Sidewalks have been particularly slippery this winter, especially in southern Finland, which has been reflected in hospital emergency services.

“There have been a lot of pedestrian crashes this winter,” the chief medical officer of the emergency services tells STT. Juha Peltonen Turku University Central Hospital (Tyks).

The falls have caused, among other things, concussions, fractures of the wrists and other upper extremities, and sprains and fractures of the ankles.

The falls caused by slipperiness are also reflected in the number of patients in hospitals and disability clinics in the Helsinki and Uusimaa Hospital District (Hus).

“Compared to last year, there have been ten percent more patients. And if you compare it to a snow-free winter a couple of years ago, there have now been up to a third more patients, ”said the chief physician. Jyrki Salmenkivi tells BTI.

According to him, the most common slip injuries are fractures of the wrist and humerus, as well as the ankle and tibia.
