After a long development, the role-playing game Skald: Against The Black Priory is finally available. The inspiration is that of Ultima and all the top-down role-playing games of the 80s, but the taste is purely modern for the revival of old videogame forms with various additions to make them more digestible by modern players (not too many, don’t worry). It is therefore about a true act of lovewhich has no shortage of interesting ideas.
If you are interested you can buy it on Steam or up GOGWhere you can buy it for only €14.99 (13.49 introductory offer). Skald: Against The Black Priory has currently received 110 reviews on Steam, 93% of which are positive, for an overall rating of “Very Positive”.
A modern classic
Skald: Against The Black Priory tells a story of rescue, which soon becomes enormously complicated, involving occult forces beyond imagining. The setting is dark fantasy, with large Lovecraftian influences, while the game system is made up of exploration phases in real time, with movements of one square at a time and turn-based combat.
The protagonist, a mercenary who must rehabilitate his family’s name, soon finds himself having to rely on the help of other adventurers, forming a party of up to six characters, to face dangers of increasing difficulty in a truly merciless land. In short, purists of the genre should certainly give him an in-depth look, given the qualities he can boast.
Note the graphics, created in pixel art, which boasts a truly inspired color palette and excellent designs, which alone are worth the price of the ticket. It only needs a 4:3 mode to be perfect (the CRT filter is there).
