Badri Hosseini Khamenei asks in a letter that the Revolutionary Guard lay down its arms
The riots that have devastated Iran since last September 16, when the 22-year-old Kurdish girl Mahsa Amini died after being arrested by the Moral Police for wearing the veil incorrectly, reach the close environment of the Government. Badri Hossein Khamenei, the sister of the Iranian supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, has condemned the repression of the regime during the protests in recent months that, according to the Executive, have cost the lives of more than 200 people; but the figure rises to at least 470, according to local and international organizations, which put the detainees at 18,000.
“I think it is now appropriate to declare that I oppose my brother’s actions and express my solidarity with all mothers who mourn the crimes of the Islamic republic, from the time of Khomeini to the current era of Ali Khamenei’s despotic caliphate,” stated in a letter. Likewise, the sister of the ayatollah stressed that “the Revolutionary Guard and Khamenei’s mercenaries must lay down their arms as soon as possible and unite with the people before it is too late.”
He is not the only public figure related to the Iranian government that confronts the supreme leader over the riots between the protesters and the Police. In this sense, former President Mohamed Khatami (1997-2005) criticized this Wednesday the harsh repression of the regime throughout the country. “Security should not serve as a pretext to suppress freedom,” he argued. He also asked the Tehran authorities to take the demands of the population seriously.
