Mexico City.- In an outpouring of relief on a Chiapas anniversary, PRI senator Paloma Sánchez criticized the indifference surrounding the violence that is shaking Sinaloa, for which she left a message of help to Mexicans.
The president of the Upper House, Gerardo Fernández Noroña (Morena), tried to reprimand the senator, but she pointed out that, as in Chiapas, violence has taken its toll on her native Sinaloa, whose population feels the consequences between the “Chapitos” and “Mayitos” groups.
Originally from Mazatlán and also spokesperson for the PRI’s NEC, Sánchez said that her fellow citizens from Culiacán have been afraid for several days. “They have been held hostage for more than a week, because even though people are afraid, the Government has refused to recognize the magnitude of the crisis, and because in this session we cannot talk about the past, while our present is at risk,” she said in the Plenary.
After that, Fernández Noroña intervened to insist that he focus on Chiapas and its 200 years.
“I would like to call you because it is the 200th anniversary of the integration of Chiapas. I understand the difficult situation that the state of Sinaloa is going through, but I would ask you to focus on the issue,” she said. “Chiapas is a wonderful state, but I am asking for help for the state of Sinaloa: let us not minimize what is happening,” Sánchez replied. “Despite the fact that there have been attempts to keep quiet and minimize what is happening, Sinaloa is collapsing in the face of murders, blockades and the fear of going out on the streets. There are at least 40 dead, 32 missing people, a dozen wounded and more than 30 confrontations in ten days.” For the tricolor senator, the scenes that shake the state seem like a war zone. “Children are scared, mothers are praying that nothing happens to their families. We should be moved and outraged to demand results and ask for the violence to stop. And I ask you, senators, to look at Sinaloa,” he insisted. “Senators: happy 200 years of Chiapas belonging to our Federation, but you cannot be blind to what is happening. I demand that the authorities respond… they know how all this began.”
