Ken Williams, a historic name in the video game industry who together with his wife Roberta Williams he founded Sierra Onlinegiving life to some much-loved video game series (King’s Quest, Space Quest, Quest for Glory, Leisure Suit Larry, Gabriel Knight and Police Quest to name a few), particularly in the field of point-and-click adventures, announced with a post on X which is in production a documentary which will tell the story of the company, which has been closed for some time.
It will be called Legends of Adventure and is produced by the same team that created the Prime Video docuseries Gamebreaker. The documentary will focus on the Williams’ contributions and will include interviews with key Sierra figures, including Al Lowe, Lori Ann Cole and Corey Cole.
Ken Williams’ announcement
Williams explained that in the past he and Roberta have turned down offers to participate in documentaries.
“Some time ago, we were contacted by some filmmakers interested in producing a documentary on the adventure game genre, but more specifically on the story of me, Roberta and Sierra On-Line.
We refused.
The story of Sierra On-Line is incredible and deserves to be told. However, we had been down this road before, with a couple of other documentary projects, and they came to nothing.
One of the producers of the project, Cade Peterson, is a friend of a friend and is in the video game industry himself. Cade kept pushing after we refused and finally convinced us that his team would get the job done.
Sierra’s story is material with which great films can be made. There are highs, lows, good and bad, and so we are thrilled to finally see it told in a video documentary. Last week we did the first interview for the documentary. It was a long and tiring day. The documentary people worked hard and captured some incredible images. I thought we were done, but there’s still a lot to tell. We are happy to see that some of our beloved Sierra authors like Al Lowe and Lori and Corey Cole are part of the project… and there are many more on the way, we’re told!”
What to say? Surely if there is a company that deserves to be told in a documentary, this is Sierra On-Line, given the contribution given to the world of video games, often unknown to the younger ones (but also to the older ones).
