Mexico City.- In her first speeches as president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum sent signals about the way in which she will exercise executive power.
When he entered the Electoral Tribunal of the Judicial Branch of the Federation, last Thursday, August 15, he met the president of the Supreme Court, Minister Norma Piña, to whom he extended his hand and responded with a kiss on the cheek. They exchanged a few words and a slight smile.
It seemed like a truce in the face of the cross-recriminations over the reform of the Judicial Branch. However, minutes later, in her message as president-elect, the Morena member stressed what her movement will seek in the coming weeks.
“The people of Mexico also decided overwhelmingly for a true justice system, one that is equal for all Mexicans.
“No one should fear anything, on the contrary, the future is promising,” he said upon receiving his certificate of majority, in contrast to several ministers who have publicly questioned the scope of the reform to the Judicial Branch, especially the election of judges, magistrates and ministers by popular vote.
Just as Andrés Manuel López Obrador did in 2018, and with a strong security presence from the National Defense and National Guard, Claudia Sheinbaum arrived in her private car through the main door, not by helicopter as Felipe Calderón and Enrique Peña Nieto did at the time.
In his speech, he stressed that on June 2, citizens made clear at the polls what the composition of Congress should be, and he called on electoral authorities to respect the will of the people.
“The electoral rule is clear regarding the assignment of majority legislators and proportional representation. I am convinced that the heads of the Judicial Branch in electoral matters are well versed in this matter, because that is how they have acted in past elections and they will also know how to respect the Constitution, the laws and the will of the people,” she said.
Before leaders of Morena and allied parties, family members and Secretaries of State in office and those about to take office, he asked not to fear anything and assured that the future will be promising.
“As head of the federal Executive, as the first female president of Mexico, know that I will act with honesty, responsibility, respecting the independence of the powers. I will govern for all Mexicans, and be assured that we do not feel and will all feel more proud of our origins and also of our future. No one should fear anything, on the contrary, the future is promising,” she said.
The Morena member stressed that the mandate at the polls was clear: to advance in the so-called Fourth Transformation, to continue the moral economy and to prevent the return of neoliberalism.
“During the electoral process, I promised to continue building peace by addressing the causes and combating impunity, and the people approved it with their vote. We will do it with strategy, the war against drugs will not return. We will continue building peace with justice,” he said.
Calls for unity from Morena supporters
Before supporters gathered at the Metropólitan Theater, President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum stated that the political movement that brought her to power has an enormous task and political and moral responsibility ahead of it.
“We have an enormous task ahead of us. The best president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, will soon be leaving office and closing his term, and we will always preserve the legacy of this great leader, but we must remain united, continue building because we owe it to the people of Mexico.
“On this beautiful day of confirmation of our collective triumph, I tell you: let’s continue building together,” the Morena member reiterated. “Let’s continue building our great homeland where history will never be written without the people of Mexico, where history will never be written without us,” she stressed.
Call me president, with an ‘a’
Sheinbaum, who will take office on October 1, took advantage of the topic to make a “respectful” invitation to refer to her as President, with an “a.”
“I respectfully invite you to name a female president, with an ‘a’. Just as we say female judge, female lawyer, female scientist, female engineer with an ‘a’,” he urged.
“Because as we have been taught, what is named exists and what is not named does not exist, and I can proudly claim this.”
