Larry Pearson, a 36-year-old man from Lubbock County, Texas, in the United States, was sentenced to 70 years in prison for spitting on two police officers.
In May 2002, this man was arrested for allegedly punching a woman in the face on several occasions. The woman was left with several injuries to her face.
Local media such as ‘Everything Lubbock’ recorded the event and stated that Pearson got angry with the officers because they did not arrest the woman with whom he had the assault problem, therefore, he began to violate the patrol in which the policemen were mobilizing.
The agents warned him to stop kicking the doors of the vehicle, and when they got out of it, Pearson began spitting on them and did not stop until they reached the detention center.
On April 12, a court sentenced Pearson guilty for two cases of harassment of a public servant and sentenced him to 70 years in prison.
The implicated had prior convictions for aggravated robbery and family violence, crimes for which, if convicted, he would have received a minimum sentence of 25 years in prison.
Larry Pearson’s defense attorney, Jim Shaw, indicated that by all accounts, this sentence for this misdemeanor is disproportionate.
As for closing arguments at trial, prosecutor Jessica Gorman asked the jury to with the sentence a message will be sent both to the suspect and to society.
Police brutality in the United States
On the other hand, there are countless cases of police violence against Afro-American people in the United States, the most recent one was presented in February of this year, in California, where five policemen attacked a 36-year-old man, with both legs amputated.
In several cameras installed in the place, the beating of the Afro man is observed. The uniformed men argue that Anthony Lowe Jr, had a knife with which he was threatening them; however, the family is calling the episode another case of police brutality, reports ‘BBC News’.
