The tragedy of Saman Abbas, the 18-year-old girl killed because she didn’t want to get married to her cousin: her mother is still at large
The story of 18 year old Saman Abbas from Novellara is full of violence, oppression and sadness. The girl was killed because she did not want to marry her 29-year-old cousin Saqib. She was continually beaten and humiliated by her father and cousins because her desire for independence was too inconvenient for the family. The even more tragic aspect of the facts is that her mother was not only aware of the violence suffered by her daughter, but she was the architect of her death. On the evening between 30 April and 1 May 2021 around midnight, she accompanied her daughter to a field to hand her over to her brother Danish Hasnain who “probably” caused her death.
The Assize Court of Reggio Emilia. it had pronounced a life sentence for both parents Abbas Shabbar and Shaheen Nazia and 16 years of imprisonment for the uncle, while it had exonerated the two cousins involved in the events. The woman, according to the new light in which the facts are seen, would be there‘material executor of the crime.
The sentence has come to new developments in recent days, highlighting the central role of the girl’s mother. The videos from the cameras that filmed the family’s movements on the night of the crime are unequivocal and the 90 seconds in which the mother disappears from the footage would be those in which Saman’s killing took place. Other evidence discussed at the trial would be the videos in which the uncles and cousins are seen with work tools in their hands (a shovel, a bucket, a small plastic bag). The court, however, ruled that these tools are compatible with the activity of the three men and that they cannot be ascribed as evidence of the crime. The motive, however, does not concern the arranged marriage of the 18-year-old and the Court presided over by Cristina Beretti with Michela Caputo, is required to clarify this fact. Nothing detracts from the gravity of what happened:
“The common intention of the defendants to commit the murder of their own daughter, the presence of both at the scene of the crime, and the proven contribution made to the realization of the event can be said to be circumstantially ascertained”.
The girl had reported several times to social workers about the seriousness of her situation and had also warned her boyfriend to alert the authorities in case she did not make herself heard for the following 48 hours. Her last message is from 11.30pm on that fateful night.
Both parents had flown to Pakistan immediately after the crime, while his uncle and cousins had left for other European destinations. They were all tracked down and took part in the trial, except the mother who is still at large.
