Earlier on Sunday, President Niinistö said that he wonders why Finland has been “raised to the brim” in Turkey’s terrorist worries. HS broadcasts the conversations live.
Of the Republic president Sauli Niinistö The Kultaranta talks hosted by Naantali began on Sunday in Naantali.
The main guests this time are the Secretary General of NATO Jens Stoltenberg and the Prime Minister of Norway Jonas Gahr Støre. The title of the ongoing discussions for Monday is “Responsible, strong and stable Pohjola”.
HS will broadcast Sunday’s talks live. Below you can see a recording of the press conference held by Niinistö and Stoltenberg in the afternoon. You can read HS’s Momentum Tracking at the end of this story.
President As expected, Niinistö and Secretary General Stoltenberg focused on the NATO process in Finland and Sweden in their bilateral meeting. During the spring, Turkey had assured both of them that it was in favor of Finland’s NATO membership, so opposition to membership came as a surprise, Niinistö said at a press conference this afternoon.
The intention is to continue discussions with Turkey and find a common solution.
“We are surprised by Turkey’s position, but in international politics, one should always take seriously what the other side says. We intend to take very seriously these views expressed by Turkey. “
Niinistö said that Finland has a good connection with NATO and Ankara in this matter.
“Let’s hope we find a solution that satisfies all parties,” he said.
According to Niinistö, there is no significant difference in Finland’s attitude towards the organizations highlighted by Turkey, such as the PKK, compared to NATO member countries.
“That’s why it’s hard to understand why we’ve been raised to a stick. But maybe it’s time for a new assessment. ”
At the press conference, Niinistö was asked whether Finland would continue to apply for NATO membership alone if, for one reason or another, Sweden’s application failed or was delayed. Turkey’s demands have provoked strong opposition in Sweden.
“It has been said in Sweden that Finland is our business. I say the Swedish thing is ours. We are moving forward together. ”

Stoltenberg emphasized the need to address Turkey’s concerns. Turkey has a lot of leverage in the negotiations.
“Turkey is an important ally. No other NATO member state has suffered as much from terrorist attacks. It must also be borne in mind that no other NATO country has received as many refugees as Turkey, ”Stoltenberg recalled.
Turkey also plays an important role in the war in Ukraine.
“Now the allies are considering the next step. We must, of course, take into account the security concerns of all allies. We are working to address Turkey’s concerns so that we can move forward. “
Stoltenberg said he still believes the talks can be resolved soon. He emphasized NATO’s commitment to Finland’s partnership.
“NATO’s open door policy is a success and the doors remain open. That is why Turkey and Finland and Sweden are discussing, and we are working for a solution as soon as possible, “Stoltenberg said.
Discussions will continue on Sunday evening with speeches by Niinistö and Stoltenberg and a discussion on the war in Ukraine, the current security situation and Finland’s NATO membership. The debate between the President and the Secretary-General will begin at approximately 6.15 pm
About a hundred speakers from various sectors of society have been invited to the President’s summer residence at Kultantaranta in Naantali. Participants include political decision-makers, researchers and representatives of government, industry, organizations and the media.
