Former president of Chile Sebastián Piñera died this Tuesday afternoon (6) after the helicopter he was in crashed in the Los Ríos region, in the south of the country. According to information from the newspaper ClarinPiñera, who governed Chile for two terms (2010-2014 and 2018-2022), piloted the aircraft that left the house of a businessman identified as José Cox, in the Illihue sector of Lago Ranco.
In addition to Piñera, preliminary information from local media outlets indicates that his sister, Magdalena Piñera, and a businessman identified as Ignacio Guerrero and his son were on board the aircraft. According to information from the Argentine portal Infobae, the three managed to get out of the helicopter and save themselves by swimming to the shore of the lake where it crashed, but Piñera was unable to free himself from his seat belt. The accident occurred amid heavy rain and fog affecting the area.
Firefighters, Carabineros and emergency service teams went to the scene to provide assistance. Piñera had a house in the commune of Lago Ranco, where the accident occurred, and was on vacation.
