In a day in which there were eight points at stake, the International team won five points and shortened the difference against the United States after the third day of the Presidents Cup which is played at Quail Hollow Club, in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The locals are ahead by 11 to 7, although this Saturday the confrontation was more even in the two turns of competition. In the morning, in the alternate format, each team won 2 points, while in the afternoon, in the fourball format, the International team took three of the four at stake.
The only Latino who was on the court this Saturday was the Colombian Sebastian Munoz, who in the afternoon won his match with Sung Jae Im by 3 and 2 against Tony Finau and Kevin Kisner.
This was Muñoz’s performance this Saturday
The Colombian once again showed a great level and it was he who put the international duo in front with his first birdie on the 4th hole. Another birdie on the 8th by Muñoz gave him back the advantage that he would never lose until the end of the match.
Muñoz’s birdies on the 12th and 13th (this one from more than 10 meters) gave him an advantage of 3 up and then the Colombian hit two excellent shots on the 16th hole that left the American duo without a chance.
“We had to go out and attack and the captain told us to play aggressive and we did that and we have to keep doing that tomorrow,” Muñoz said after his match.
The Bogota native will have action in the individual duels on the last day, on Sunday: he will face the American Scottie Scheffler, number one in the world.
“We have a lot of trust already with SungJae, and we know each other. I think we mix very well. He is a player of great quality and we knew that he was going to appear”, said Muñoz who together with the Korean won a point and a half so far in the competition.
His teammate SungJae Im also recognized Muñoz’s good game. “It was important to win and Sebastian made some very good putts throughout the round that kept us ahead,” said the Korean.
Mito Pereira did not participate this Saturday due to the decision of captain Trevor Immelman.
Among the highlights of the day were the two victories of the duo Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas, who with these two results won the four games they played. And in the International team it was the young Tom Kim who got all the applause, winning in both at-bats and making very important putts.
This Sunday the individual matches that will define the Presidents Cup will be played. The team that reaches 15 ½ will be the one to keep the cup.
