A team of scientists has warned of the return of the “zombie virus” frozen 48,500 years ago, as the Arctic ice melts due to climate change.
A recent report stated that it is wrong to suggest that “zombie viruses do not pose a threat to public health,” according to the American “CNN” website.
“This rapid thawing of permafrost in the Arctic is causing the revival of ancient organic matter preserved thousands of years ago in the deep soil layers,” the report added.
It is known that the permafrost, which constitutes 25 percent of the northern hemisphere, is cold and devoid of oxygen, and that light does not penetrate it, according to Sky News Arabia.
However, experts say climate change, which is causing the temperature to double in the Arctic, may lead to a resurgence of viruses that can endanger animal and human health after remaining dormant for tens of thousands of years.
