The Internet Security Office has warned of a new ‘phishing’ campaign that supplants the instant messaging service
The Internet Security Office (OSI) has detected an email campaign impersonating WhatsApp whose message contains a malicious link. The fake notice pretends to be a backup of WhatsApp conversations and call history, urging the user to click on the link to download it. The Civil Guard has shared this ‘phishing’ alert through its social networks.
Cybercriminals are sending these scam emails with the aim of infecting the device via Trojan download. The message seeks to attract attention with a supposed WhatsApp backup, since it is a common procedure in the application. It is identified with the subjects: ‘WhatsApp message security copy *913071605 Nº (xxxxx)’ or ‘Attention – unattended postman N (XXXXXX)’, although it is not ruled out that there are other emails with different subjects, but with the same objective of inciting the user to download a malicious file. Guardia Civil and OSI warn that it is a scam, so you should not download the file. Ignore and delete the message.

What to do if you have downloaded the file
The OSI explains that if you have downloaded and executed the malicious file, your device may have been infected. Therefore, to protect your device, you should scan it with an updated antivirus. In case you need support or assistance to eliminate the Trojan, INCIBE offers you its response and support service for security incidents.
When you have doubts about the authenticity of a message, SMS or email, you can contact the company or service that supposedly sent you the email, always through their official customer service channels. But remember that you should never click on any link, or download any attached file if you are not 100% sure of its reliability.
In addition, they recommend making backup copies periodically with all the information that you consider important so that, in the event that your computer is affected by a security incident, you do not lose it. It is also advisable to keep your devices updated and always protected with an antivirus.
