The Democrat Sarah McBride This Tuesday has become the first transgender woman in obtaining a seat in the United States Congress, according to projections of the results of the US elections.
McBride, 34, has managed to represent Delaware in the United States Congress after winning 57.6% of the votes against Republican candidate John Whalen III. In 2020, he became the first person who identifies as transgender to serve in the state Senate.
«Thanks, Delaware! Thanks to your votes and your values, I am proud to be your next member of Congress. Delaware has sent a message loud and clear: we must be a country that protects reproductive freedom, ensures paid leave and affordable child care for all our families, ensures that housing and health care are available to all and is a democracy big enough for everyone,” he expressed through his profile on the social network X.
During an interview with NBC television in September, McBride said his goal in Congress was to work to break the partisan gridlock and pass laws such as paid medical leave.
The projections also give victory in the state of Delaware to the Democratic candidate to occupy the White House, the vice president Kamala Harrisagainst the Republican candidate, Donald Trump.
