The holiday was not entered in the Finnish almanac until 2004.
The Sami people national day is celebrated today.
The background of the celebration is the first Nordic Sámi meeting, which was held in Trondheim, Norway in 1917. The purpose of the meeting over a hundred years ago was to reflect on the life opportunities of the Sámi and to take a stand on issues concerning the Sámi.
The holiday was not entered in the Finnish almanac until 2004. However, the Sámi national day was already decided in 1992.
National Day is one of the Sami people's flag days, and the authorities of Finland, Sweden and Norway recommend general flag flying.
National Day celebrations have traditionally been organized in different parts of the Sámi region and outside of it.
