Salvini closes the electoral campaign with Vannacci in Milan
Matteo Salvini focuses on peace and is ready to bring a document to Parliament to remind us that Italy “repudiates war”. For the closing rally of the League’s electoral campaign, on the back of Piazza Duomo in Milan, a thousand militants gathered to see the group leaders, governors and ministers of the party (Calderoli, Locatelli and Valditara) ‘parading’, before the two final speeches by the general Roberto Vannacci and Salvini. Some moments of tension were recorded between the police and some young antagonists who wanted to reach a League gazebo to tear down a poster. But it all fits in a few minutes. Vannacci takes the floor and immediately returns to the Xmas provocation: “There are so many of you, it’s like having a legion in front of you, the tenth legion.”
And he closes by quoting another general, Massimo Decimo Meridio from “Gladiator”: “On 8 and 9 June vote Lega and write Vannacci and at your signal we will unleash hell”. Salvini, who at the beginning of his speech is accompanied by the music of “Blowing in the wind” by Bob Dylan, announces a new initiative in Parliament against the war: “In the next few days the League groups in the Chamber and Senate will propose some documents to commit the entire Parliament to respect article 11 of the Constitution, Italy repudiates the war. We can leave the third world war and nuclear war on their doorstep”. The reference is to the war in Ukraine on which Salvini clarifies: “Too many are talking out of turn about war these weeks. Never an Italian soldier to fight and die in Ukraine, never an Italian missile to shed blood and death in Russia: whoever chooses the League chooses peace”.
The deputy prime minister then says he is confident that “the League will be the best surprise” of the European elections, also because in Europe “we have not changed our minds, we have never voted for Ursula Von der Leyen and we will never vote for Ursula Von Der Leyen” at Presidency of the European Commission. Instead “we want the center-right united in the Municipalities, in the Regions, in Rome, and also in the European Parliament. And if someone from the center-right to spite says ‘no with the League’ or prefers Macron to Le Pen, he is not disrespecting the League but it harms Italy and Italians.” After the secretary’s speech, the rally ends on the notes of “Generale”. They are all on stage next to the leader: the ministers Calderoli, Valditara and Locatelli, the governors Zaia, Attilio Fontana, Fedriga and Fugatti, the group leaders Romeo, Molinari and Zanni, the candidates for the European elections from the north-west and north-east. When the final “break the lines” occurs, Salvini and Vannacci begin to sign copies of their books.
