On average, every Russian in 2020 threw out 453.4 kg of garbage. This figure is 2.4% less than in 2019 – 464.7 kg per person, follows from the FinExpertiza study, which Izvestia got acquainted with.
The company has prepared a regional rating based on Rosstat data on solid municipal waste (MSW) removed from urban areas. Experts took into account the garbage that was transported from container sites in residential areas, offices and private houses.
Sakhalin residents became the leaders in terms of the amount of garbage thrown away: on average, a resident of the region produced 1.2 tons of waste. Then there are the Tula region and Sevastopol with indicators of 1 ton, the Magadan region with almost 957 kg and Ingushetia with 937 kg.
In 2019, almost all of the listed regions were in the first lines in the ranking, only Ingushetia became a newcomer in the top 5. Izvestia sent inquiries to the regional governments.
According to analysts’ calculations, the citizens of Chechnya threw out the least amount of rubbish; on average, almost 201 kg of waste fell on the average per capita of the urban population in the region. Also, the bottom lines of the rating were taken by Mari El with 202 kg, Chuvashia – 239 kg, Volgograd region – 264.7 kg and Chelyabinsk region – 276.6 kg.
