As already happened a few weeks ago in France, the Ferrari has put in place a game of wakes between its drivers in qualifying also in Belgium, taking advantage of the penalty and the departure from the rear of one of its two standard bearers. If in Le Castellet it was Carlos Sainz to supply it to Charles Leclerc, yesterday in Spa-Francorchamps the roles were reversed. In both cases the result was maximized, with Leclerc on pole at Paul Ricard and Sainz starting from the first position this afternoon, taking advantage of Max Verstappen’s retreat. For the driver from Madrid it will be the second start at the pole of his career, after that of Silverstone, and the interview with the Spanish journalists reported by As gave him the opportunity to take the most classic of pebbles out of his shoe: “The trail of Charles? These are things that need to be emphasized when we are criticized as a team. When we do well, sometimes nobody says it. Today we worked very well as a team and if I will start from the front it is thanks to teamwork. I’m glad that someone can notice and write it down ”.
Sainz is aware that it will be difficult to keep Perez behind during the first lap and manage the comeback of a very fast Verstappen from the rear, so he expects anything but a simple race: “I’m happy for pole, because it wasn’t easy to beat a Red Bull with the speed they showed. I am happy to start from the front but I don’t know how long it will last. Up to Turn 5 we will be in full swing for a long time and Red Bull is going very fast and it will be really hard to keep Checo behind. We hope to go faster in the race than in qualifying. If temperatures rise, this could help“. Asked about the phrases of Alonso, who hopes for contact between him and Perez, he joked: “If I were in his position, I would hope so too. Checo and I are always aggressive, but also respectful. We have more to lose than to gain in contact ”.
