It is “very positive” news, now “let’s try to reconstruct what was broken between us in Egypt and Italy due to the Regeni case and that of Patrick George Zaki”. This was stated in an interview with Aki-Adnkronos International Mohamed Anwar El Sadat, grandson of the former Egyptian president assassinated in 1981 and leader of the Reform and Development Party, commenting on the decision of the Mansoura court, which ordered the release of the student of the Alma Mater University of Bologna pending a new trial hearing scheduled for February 1st.
“I hope that relations can return to normal. We must try to find ways and means for our mutual benefit and for our historical relationships”, continues Sadat, stating that he has followed the Zaki case “closely”. “I was also in contact with the Italian ambassador in Cairo and they were all happy with the news”, adds the nephew of the former president, describing the turn of the trial as “promising”.
“The most important thing now is that (Zaki, ed) can reunite with his family and friends and relax”, he explains, also convinced that “our attorney general will not appeal against the court’s decision to release him” .
According to the leader of the Reform and Development Party, the student “can also begin to have contacts with his university”, recalling that it is “a matter of interest to everyone” that he can continue his studies and research in the academic field.
Sadat, however, “doubts” that the Egyptian authorities will allow him to travel to Italy until February 1. “We have to see, maybe there is a possibility – he concludes – but with Covid restrictions, nobody really likes to travel to Europe nowadays”.
