Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, in a message to his supporters, said that he was ready to appear before a free and fair trial and prove his innocence. This was announced on November 25 by the politician’s lawyer Nika Gvaramia.
“In the court of Ivanishvili (former Prime Minister of Georgia Bidzina Ivanishvili – Ed.) I have no chance of achieving justice. I again repeat my proposal that I am ready to appear before a fair independent court and defend my truth there, “Gvaramia quotes Saakashvili.
The ex-president also believes that an initiative group should deal with his release, which, on the one hand, will take into account the main political goals of the opposition, and on the other hand, coordinate the campaign for his release.
Saakashvili added that he does not see himself “in any of the configurations of the future government.” He stressed that the coming weeks will be very important for Georgia.
“If we can consolidate our forces, maintain a political attitude, increase the number of participants in the struggle, we will achieve our goal and achieve victory. Now any pause by the current authorities will be perceived as our defeat, which is physically deadly for me and for our country, therefore, not a step back will be active, active and again active, ”the politician concluded.
The former Georgian leader was detained October 1 in Tbilisi after his return to the country ahead of local elections. On the same day, the politician went on a hunger strike. A criminal case was initiated against him on illegal crossing of the country’s border. In addition, the ex-president at home was convicted in absentia of the murder of banker Sandro Girgvliani and the beating of deputy Valery Gelashvili. In the first case, he was sentenced to three years in prison, in the second – to six.
On November 7, Saakashvili refused to take medicine in the prison’s medical unit. This was due to the publication of a video where the ex-president of Georgia eats and drinks, despite the earlier declared hunger strike. The next day he was forcibly taken from the prison to the hospital. A video appeared on the network, which shows how the politician who has been on a hunger strike for more than 40 days evades the police officers accompanying him.
On November 19, specialists who visited Saakashvili in prison revealed a serious brain disease, due to which the politician is likely to develop a coma with a possible fatal outcome. In this regard, the Ministry of Justice of Georgia decided to take the ex-president, who is in the intensive care unit of the prison hospital, to the military hospital in Gori.
On November 20, the ex-president was taken to the Gori military hospital, where doctors will treat him after a long hunger strike. On November 21, it was reported that Saakashvili’s personal doctor Nikoloz Kipshidze said that the politician needed the help of a psychologist and psychiatrist. At the same time, the physician noted that it is possible that the involvement of foreign specialists will be required to assess the condition.
On November 24, Saakashvili’s mother Giuli Alasania stated that her son was depressed.
“He is very depressed, this is not the same person as he was before. We all, the whole society must take care to free this person. Misha himself believes that now is an important stage for the fight. We must all be active in order to free Misha, ”the woman said.
