Officially, the film cannot be seen in Russia: Putin has branded it as “contrary to the objectives of preserving and strengthening the traditional spiritual values of the nation”. But a doll in pink is worth the risk: the Hollywood boycott – which began immediately after the invasion of Ukraine – and the Kremlin’s censorship were cleverly circumvented with imaginative means. Copies of the banned film were obtained from neighboring Russian-speaking countries (where Ken’s house became the “macho dacha”) or through hacking. Then, to avoid problems at the box office – explains the BBC – the cinemas put tickets on sale for Russian-produced short films, which were actually followed by the screening of Barbie. There are no posters, advertisements or television commercials as normally happens with big Hollywood films and the only way to find out the location and time of the screenings is through word of mouth or the cinema’s social media. To further hide the true nature of the projection Barbie it was renamed to «Speed Dating», or referred to in the programs as a mysterious «pre-show service».
