Pawel Wozny, Polish ambassador to Colombia, raised his fears and possible scenarios within the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which has high tension throughout the world.
What is Poland’s position on the Russian invasion of Ukraine?
The position is very clear: we, being neighbors of Ukraine and members of the European Union (EU) and NATO, have long viewed with great concern the policies of the Russian authorities. We have warned that this policy is based on an imperial vision and on the obsolete concept of zones of influence. Russia has never accepted that the former republics of the Soviet Union, including Ukraine, are now independent countries.. We are seeing brutal and unjustified aggression, which was in no way provoked by Ukraine.
It is a military attack against an independent and sovereign State and in no way can it be justified. The only solution may be the total and absolute withdrawal of Russian troops of Ukraine and guarantee the peace and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

What are the risks currently for the EU over its dependence on Russian gas and energy?
The idea cannot be accepted, as some European countries did in the past, of doing business with Russia without taking into account its political attitude and the interests of the EU. Russian policy has been to try to divide Europe, the EU and NATO and one of its tools has been its gas projects, trying to create a relationship of dependence on European countries of the Russian gas supply.
The unity of the European Union and a resounding no to all kinds of blackmail by Russia using gas supplies are important.
The unity of the European Union and a resounding no to all kinds of blackmail by Russia using gas supplies are important. The answer has to be the diversification of Europe’s gas supply sources; this is a policy that Poland has always supported. We cannot depend so much on a single gas supplier, especially if it is someone so unpredictable and who has a policy as aggressive and in violation of international law as Russia.
What is the worst case scenario for which Europe and Poland should be prepared?
Worst case scenario is if Russia takes over Ukraine and if it annexes its territory or a satellite country completely dependent on Moscow does so. And even worse if the war conflict spread to other countries. It is a scenario that we obviously do not want and I have faith that a united and concerted response from the international community to this aggressive policy, with the system of strong sanctions against Russia, will make Putin think about stopping this madness that is war.
In context: Why is Russia invading Ukraine? This is what you should know
I would like to believe that this international unity manages to stop this worst scenario, because if they don’t stop it, the situation is going to be very serious. It is important to stop Putin and make him understand that the cost of continuing with this aggressive and warlike policy is going to be too high for Russia. If he (Putin) knows how to act reasonably and has not totally lost any kind of common sense, there may still be hope of stopping this tragedy of war. But a firm, determined and united response from the international community is needed. In this context, the resolution of the UN General Assembly approved yesterday is important, which was supported by the vast majority of the countries of the world, including all the member countries of the EU and NATO.
