Federal Public Ministry (MPF) and the Federal Public Defender’s Office (DPU) went to Federal Court to demand payment of compensation for collective moral damages from Google and four military police officers. From the digital platform MPF and DPU charge R$ 1 million. From the PMs R$ 200 thousand each.
The request for financial compensation was made in a public civil action due to the dissemination of hate speech and incitement to violence in posts on podcast and videocast programs on YouTube, a Google platform.
According to the authors, the civil action, presented this Tuesday, the 30th, aims to delete some posts and regulate the content broadcast by police officers in podcast and videocast programs on the platform, to prevent abuse of the right to freedom of expression . The MPF and the DPU also asked for Google to supervise and moderate content posted on the Copcast, Fala Glauber, Café com a Política and Danilo Snider channels.
The case began to be investigated by the MPF’s Regional Prosecutor’s Office for Citizens’ Rights (PRDC), in Rio de Janeiro, following a report published by Ponte Jornalismo, which shows excerpts of videos of police officers confessing to crimes with impunity in programs posted on YouTube. In the videos, military personnel report violent approaches to deaths and cases of violence and attacks against women and children, as revealed by the independent journalism website.
The action also asks the State of Rio de Janeiro to adopt measures to prevent hateful or dangerous speech by members of the Military Police. For the MPF and DPU, disciplinary measures must be adopted, regulating the use of social networks by military personnel. The measure requires monitoring the misuse of these platforms by public agents, since, according to agencies, there is a dissemination of posts by police officers with violent and discriminatory content, “inciting violence and stigmatizing poor, black and peripheral communities”.
Wanted by Estadão, Google and police officers Jocimar dos Santos Ramos (CopCast), Glauber Cortes Mendonça (Fala Glauber), Danilo Martins Barboza (Danilo Snider) and Kauam Pagliarini Felipe (Café com a Política) did not respond by the time the report was completed.
