Abroad|The Russian attack
None of the fighters in the International Legion were wounded in the attack, says Damien Magrou, the Norwegian spokesman for the legion.
30 year old a finnish man was hit by a free strike in russia on sunday in ukraine on sunday. He described the beginning of the missile strike with the words “without warning of a fucking pounding”.
“I left in my underwear without shoes to run around,” the man described the situation in a Signal message he sent to HS on Tuesday.
After running into the forest, missiles were constantly flying over, according to the man.
“Tearing sound and big explosions,” he signaled.
Male his identity is known to HS, as is the fact that he left for Ukraine as a volunteer in early March.
The man’s description corresponds to a massive attack on Javoriv’s base. Russia bombed Javoriv in western Ukraine on Sunday morning with numerous cruise missiles.
According to Ukrainian authorities, the attack killed at least 35 people and injured 134 people. Russia has claimed a much higher death toll.
In Javoriv there were probably a few Finnish guest fighters.
A Finnish source told HS about his son, who went to Ukraine to fight in early March and has apparently been in Javoriv. The boy, on the other hand, has told about at least two other Finns he has been in contact with.
Fighters from abroad have been assembled at the Javoriv base before being sent to the actual war zones. It would seem likely that there were guest fighters among Sunday’s victims as well.
Ukraine spokesman for the international legion Damien Magrou tells by phone from Ukraine that none of the fighters in the legion were wounded in the attack on Javoriv.
“This is a double and triple confirmed thing,” says Norwegian Magrou.
The international legion is a member of the Ukrainian armed forces, which includes an unknown number of foreign fighters. There are Finns among them.
Magrou has no authority to report on operational matters such as numbers. However, he notes that some of the legion’s soldiers are already on the front lines.
There may also be foreign fighters in Ukraine taking part in the war in some more informal group than in the international legion. In that case, however, they could not have been in Javoriv, because it is precisely the base of the Ukrainian army.
Finland authorities are not aware of the number of people who volunteered to fight in Ukraine, the Foreign Ministry said.
There are thirty Finns who have made a travel declaration in Ukraine. The Ministry for Foreign Affairs is also aware of some Finns in Ukraine who have not made a declaration.
