Lately it’s hard not to talk about the Russia and its recent actions that have impacted the entire world, including the video game industry.
A recent thread on Reddit indicates that in an effort to avoid potentially losing access to Unity And Unreal Engine 5 in the future, the country’s IT developers have started talking to the Ministry of Digital Development to create a “national game engine“to be used for Russian developers. The possibility of allocating state funds was also discussed during the talks.
The invasion of Ukraine caused Russia to lose access to many infrastructure options. Sanctions have taken a lot out of Russia and the developers want to address this problematic situation.
In a report on the Polish website XGP, this information is confirmed by providing additional context. On the page we note that, even if the idea is approved, the projects would have to start from scratch. On the contrary, Unity and Unreal Engine “they already have an ecosystem developed in a very detailed way, with ready-made integrations“.
It all started on May 18 last, in a closed-door meeting between the presidential administration and representatives of the video game industry. On this occasion, the developers discussed the further use of Unity and Unreal Engine and the very real possibility that access may be restricted in the future.
Other concerns that have been noted include the lack of specialists willing to work on a brand new engine, as well as the possibility that graphics card manufacturers (such as AMD or NVIDIA) are not too keen to assist with Russian software development. . As for this “national game engine”, it has not yet been approved at the moment.
