Of the Russians trips to Europe are interrupted this spring, but they can be remembered at the St. Petersburg Great exhibition at the Moscow State Historical Museum.

Emperor Peter the Great Thursday marks the 350th anniversary of the birth. In Russia, the birthday of the still highly respected and popular ruler is celebrated throughout the year.

President Vladimir Putin already in 2018 ruled that this year would be the jubilee year of Peter the Great. The birthday of the emperor, who has been influenced by the West, is surprisingly celebrated in completely different circumstances than the organizers of the anniversary year may have thought.

On the emperor’s birthday, the distance between Russia and the West is almost crossed. Air and train traffic, cultural relations and trade have largely been cut off. Diplomats have been deported on both sides.

In Russia circulates memes on the Internet that combine images of Peter the Great and Putin. Peter below the big picture reads “opened a window to Europe” and Putin “closed the window to Europe”. The joke is, “It was ventilated and that’s enough.”

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov at a remote news conference last Thursday, a Russian journalist asked if the Russian leadership now plans to close the window opened by Peter the Great to Europe.

“No one is going to shut down anything,” Peskov replied. He also assured that Putin does not intend to miss the anniversary celebrations.

On Monday, Peskov confirmed that the president will be attending an event in honor of Peter the Great’s 350th anniversary on Thursday, but has not yet specified where.

The exhibition “Peter the Great – Journeys to Europe” was presented to the media on Tuesday at the Moscow State Historical Museum in the Greater Moscow City.

In Moscow The main events of the anniversary year include the exhibition “Peter the Great – Journeys to Europe”, which opened to the public on Wednesday at the State Historical Museum on the Red Square.

Nearly 350 exhibits are on display, telling of Peter the Great’s two long journeys to Europe between 1697 and 1698 and 1716-1717. Among other things, the clothes acquired by the emperor from his travels are on display.

The first of the trips lasted 533 days and the second 611 days. Peter the Great visited and spent time in Curonia, Prussia, the Netherlands, Austria, France, England and Poland, among others.

Curator of the exhibition Olga Sokolovan According to him, the theme of the exhibition was European travel, as it was they who greatly influenced the reforms and changes that the emperor carried out in Russia, among other things, in the country’s administration, science and education.

“The exhibition is dedicated to the very peaceful tradition of travel and the spiritual baggage that everyone acquires while traveling. A person in the position of Peter the Great can bring activity not only to his own life but also to the culture and destiny of the whole country and people. ”

Olga Sokolova, the curator of the exhibition about Peter the Great, said that the exhibition can also be viewed virtually on the website of the State Historical Museum.

Peter the Great brought kaftan, among other things, as a gift from his travels in Europe.

Wanderings expanded political and cultural relations with Russia. As one of his most visible achievements, St. Petersburg the Great founded the city of St. Petersburg and built a strong navy in its country along the model of European countries.

Much of Peter the Great’s reign was spent in wars, such as the Great Northern War, during which Russia occupied Finland. The occupation, or great hatred, that lasted for eight years was a time of suffering for Finns.

Peter the Great ordered his army to destroy the entire coast of Ostrobothnia, and the army did the work as ordered.

Moscow Professor at the School of Economics, a historian who studied the reforms of Peter the Great Kirill Solovyov describes Peter the Great as revolutionary on the throne, while in modern Russia one looks back and seeks ideals from there.

The reforms in St. Petersburg ushered in a new era in Russia.

“Peter I’s reforms were unfinished, ill-considered, and largely carried out after his death. But what is important is that they set the direction for development. They created the concept of the state, which was implemented to some extent until 1917 and even in some elements. ”

And is Russia’s window to Europe closed now?

“I think it’s impossible to close the window on Europe for the simple reason that Russia – whatever it is – belongs to Europe in many ways: both culturally and from the perspective of its historical past,” Solovyov says.

“Closing the window to Europe now is an even more utopian project than opening the window open, as Peter I had planned in the early 18th century.”

Russian Minister of Culture Olga Ljubimovan According to the news agency, 158 events dedicated to St. Petersburg the Great will be held around the country by the end of the year Tass.

Ljubimova shed light on the anniversary at the inaugural meeting of the Organizing Committee on Tuesday at the State Historical Museum. Foreign media were not allowed to attend the event for “security reasons”.
