Russia hopes the Taliban will defeat ISIS

Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry

On Thursday, Russia expressed its hope that the Taliban will defeat the terrorist organization ISIS in Afghanistan, as promised.
A week before a conference in Moscow in which the movement will participate, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told a press conference, “We are concerned that the activity of the terrorist organization ISIS is not declining.”
“We hope that the assurances of the new authorities in Kabul, which confirmed that they are able to confront ISIS without foreign support, will be fulfilled,” she added.
Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his concern on Wednesday about the flow of militants from Syria and Iraq into Afghanistan and that they might seek to “destabilize the neighboring countries” of Russia.
Zakharova also confirmed that an international meeting will be held on October 20, which will be attended by envoys of the Taliban.
The conference will address security issues as well as those related to humanitarian aid and reconstruction.
